New York City is known for many things: the bright lights of Broadway, fine cuisine and corner vendors, glamour and excitement. Yet for those interested in the paranormal and unexplained, the Big Apple may very well be renamed the Big Haunt.
A growing interest in the paranormal and unexplained draws visitors to the City, year after year, to explore the less than touristy parts of the five boroughs. Celebrity spooks and historical specters are the stars of these underworld tours, and you never know when some will stop by to say hello, or “Boo!”
Once you’ve seen the popular sights the city has to offer, why not take a trip down the eerie side of the City many call home…years after they have departed? If you’re in the mood for a frightfully fun stay in New York, and can’t wait until the Halloween, the city is not without yearlong otherworldly charm.
Here are just a few frightfully fun spots to explore:
Merchant’s House Museum: This is a must-see for any ghost chaser, where else but the one place called the “most haunted house in Manhattan?” Certain times of the year, the Merchant’s House Museum presents ghost tours and lectures on various topics, including the art of dying. If you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of any of the curious spirits known to wander the property, perhaps one of Seabury Tredwell, who died in the very house in 1865. Call ahead to find out when the Museum offers an authentic recreation of his passing and funeral.
Hotel Chelsea: The Chelsea Hotel is long known as a one-time residence for widely-known literary and pop culture icons. William S. Burroughs, Donald Sutherland, and Bob Dylan once hung their hats here, and rocker Sid Vicious reportedly killed his girlfriend Nancy in their room.
Whether Nancy haunts the Chelsea remains to be confirmed, but it is said that the ghost of Dylan Thomas haunts the famous hotel. Of course, he died after drinking too many spirits at the White Horse Tavern and was taken to the Chelsea after collapsing outside the pub. It is believed he haunts the White Horse, too, so maybe he’s pulling double duty?
New Amsterdam Theater: Did you hear the one, too, about the Ziegfield Follies showgirl who haunts this popular venue? Many have claimed to see Olive Thomas strutting the stage in her beaded costume, no doubt looking to take one last bow.
Radio City Music Hall: If the Rockettes are kicking extra high some nights, it could be from fright! The ghost of Roxy Rothafel is said to haunt the theatre he built.
The Algonquin Hotel: Known for the eclectic group of wits and writers of the earliest 20th century who gathered often as the Vicious Circle, this hotel is also home to permanent guests. It is said some of the Circle have continued their stay at their favorite Round Table and elsewhere in the hotel. Could it be the tart-tongued Dorothy Parker, the hilariously mute Harpo Marx, or maybe Alexander Woollcott? If you hear a horn blow from nowhere, that may narrow it down.
The Dakota: This stylish Manhattan apartment building is believed to be haunted by the ghost of John Lennon, who was fatally shot near the entrance.
Hotels and theatres, pop stars and fallen stars, New York City is home to millions. How many are living as opposed to the living dead is difficult to say, but for those with a fascination for the paranormal half the fun is finding out.

TAPS Visits Amos J. Blake Museum in Fitzwilliam, NH

Bobby Elgee asked:
This article was written in response to a recent newspaper article (published in the Keene Sentinel, Keene, NH on Saturday, July 10, 2009) pertaining to The Atlantic Paranormal Society’s (TAPS) recent investigation of the Amos J. Blake House Museum in Fitzwilliam, NH, the museum of the Fitzwilliam Historical Society, and their intention to use the footage on their television show Ghost Hunters.
As a paranormal investigator, I have participated in three investigations at the Amos J. Blake House Museum. The group I am a member of was invited to investigate the location by the museum’s curator. I am aware of approximately six different paranormal groups that have investigated the site.
Though there are some indications of paranormal activity at the museum, all I have personally experienced is one cold spot, an unexplained voice, as well as capturing photographs of some strange mist. This is certainly not enough evidence to declare the place haunted by the standards of most paranormal investigators, however, we are all aware of the rarity of such phenomena and the difficulty of catching such phenomena on tape.
More recently, reports have been made of multiple apparitions, objects moving, and intelligent spirits haunting the location. These phenomena–as well as other strange events–have been reported by several groups, though most of these claims were made by Conscious Spirits Paranormal Group (CSPG), a team founded by the museums curator.
These events were documented on CSPG’s Web site as recently as Thursday July 8th. Upon review of the groups site on Monday July 13, all references to the Amos J. Blake House investigations had been removed, though there is documentation of the groups investigation of the location at the Web site of the Keene State Equinox, a local college newspaper.
There are several links– accessible via Google searches–to CSPG’s Web site that portray their involvement with this location.
It is unclear to me why this information was deleted. I certainly enjoyed following the reported activity and even though our group considered the purported “evidence” to be highly exaggerated–being more attentive to debunking then many groups–I found it very entertaining.
At this point in time, two of the few sites where I can find any significant documentation of paranormal activity at the museum is on Dark Nights Paranormal’s as well as ECTO Paranormal’s, two teams of competent and tech-savvy investigators based in the general area. There is at least one other Web site where documentation of an investigation of the museum is posted, however, the location is not being disclosed–though it was previously identified as such.
Apparently, there was a minor controversy involved with “Ghost Hunters,” filming at the location, as it was reported that the museum’s Board of Directors had no prior knowledge of the TAPS investigation of the museum. The newspaper article published several comments from a member of the board pertaining to this fact, and–as of the time this article was written–there is still appears to be some question as to who signed the release form that allowed the filming in the first place. The paper also reported that the curator of the museum–who participated in the filming–had no comment.
I find it interesting that the board had no prior knowledge of a film crew being invited to the location. It is also of interest to note that the curator of the museum is a former member of the group I am involved with. This individual left our group abruptly in February or March–and subsequently formed her own group–shortly after informing me that TAPS had contacted her and had expressed interest in setting up on the location. It was also at this time that the reports of purported paranormal activity at the location increased significantly.
It is clear to me that TAPS was interested in this location, and–at least according to the curator–that there was some contact going on during this time between them and the museum..
In an open query to the Board of Directors of the Fitzwilliam Historical Society, I would ask the them to consider the publicity that may be garnered from the location’s appearance on a national television show. In my experience, considering locations like the museum, publicity is a good thing.
Many similar sites have capitalized on such attention for monetary gain and recognition. The board will certainly want to consider how they are going to handle requests from individuals and groups wanting to complete paranormal investigations of the location–if you choose to allow them at all–as well as other recognition and media attention that arises from such an event.
Some places charge special fees for unique “haunted tours,” and others even arrange all-night ghost hunts. The U.S.S. Salem in Boston, MA, The Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA, and Waverly Hills Sanitorium in Louisville, KY are examples of locations that are earning revenue and recognition secondary to their haunted status, and are places where one can participate in a paranormal investigation, above and beyond taking a simple tour.
In general, I would say that most ghost hunters are a respectful bunch, and the good ones appreciate the historical significance of such locations, as well as the potential for any paranormal activity.
The Amos J. Blake House Museum is a wonderful example of a New England historical society museum with an interesting and varied collection of artifacts, and–in my mind–this fact FAR outstrips the possibility of any paranormal activity occurring there.
I have participated many paranormal investigations–and have experienced some very strange things–however, on a scale of 1 to 10 related to possible paranormal activity, I would rate the museum a 2 or 3. Considering its wonderful collection and the history contained within its walls, I would rate it a 10.
Of course TAPS, with their top-of-the-line equipment and considerable resources may certainly be more successful then an amateur ghost hunter such as myself when it comes to finding evidence of possible paranormal activity.
It is obvious to me that the board of the Fitzwilliam Historical Society needs to seriously consider if this is a direction they would like to move in, and how the museum got to this point in the first place–a national television show filming in the location, apparently without it’s knowledge and consent.
At this time, it appears that consent has been given, albeit in a method in which the board was not aware, and that the investigation will air on national television. The board should consider how they can take advantage of this. My guess is that the situation be viewed as a positive one, an opportunity to increase attention for the museum, possibly resulting in revenue that could be used to help maintain this historic location. It may also have the added benefit of drawing some tourism to the town of Fitzwilliam, and the Monadnock area in general.
Of course, the board could certainly decide to let the spirits rest as well.

Master The Law Of attraction for manifesting your desires

Conrad Raw asked:
"Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve." Napoleon Hill, author of many books about the mind and success, wrote the quote many years ago after interviewing W. Clement Stone. It still holds true today. The mind is an incredible tool that has untapped and misused power. Science knows how to go to the moon, and yet they only know the tip of the iceberg information about the paranormal and the use of the mind to achieve success, live longer, live better and be happier.
The term paranormal is a misnomer because, there’s nothing "beyond normal" using the principals of mind power, such as "The law of attraction". You use it everyday from morning to night. Many people, however, use it improperly and attract negative outcomes.
The law of attraction is nothing more than deciding what you want, focusing on visualizing yourself with that and believing that it already is available. Many untrained men and women use it to achieve either what they want, or exactly the opposite. The mind uses the law of attraction with no regard for good, bad, like or dislikes. You get what you ask for, regardless of whether you want it or not.
Suppose you want the house. You draw up the plans, scour magazines for pictures of different rooms, and picture yourself inside the house greeting guests. One day out of nowhere, you drive past the house of your dreams and find it for sale. You believe this is the right home but have no money to purchase it. Normal people would shrug their shoulders and walk away, not you. You know this is the house, you saw it in your dreams and every waking moment. You decide to check with the realtor anyway. Amazingly, the owner wants to finance the house for the seller, himself and doesn’t need a down payment. The payments suggested fit into your budget. The house is yours. Is it coincidence? No, it is the law of attraction at work.
Do you ever wonder why some people get right up to the door of success only to have it slam in their face. They use the law of attraction in a negative way. They see themselves as failures.
You can create your own reality. It works. When you use creative visualization with the law of attraction, you direct your mind to see you where you want to be. There’s nothing mystical about it. It works on several planes. The first is the fact that you are more aware when opportunity arises. You notice the steps to your goal when they confront you. In the example above, you saw the house of your dreams.
The second is that you believe that your dream is attainable so you take action on it, action that you never would have attempted without your visualization to confirm that success was possible. In the example, you looked at the house, something you normally wouldn’t do.
The third may seem mystical and paranormal but is just science we don’t yet understand. Had someone shown early man the computer, he would have said it was magic or witchcraft. He would have said that, not because it is paranormal but because he didn’t yet understand how it worked or all the principals involved.
That’s the same concept we have of the law of attraction. Thoughts are things; they are energy waiting to materialize. It requires guidance and focus but is available to every man and woman. In the example, your energy influenced the seller’s decision to finance the sale, even before you met him. Just like the computer, you don’t have to understand how it works to use it.
When you learn to use the law of attraction in a controlled positive manner, a universe of possibilities begin to show up in your life. It isn’t mystical, nor is it magical, like the early man, you just don’t have the science yet to understand it.

Flawless gems are auspicious and flawed gems are a source of misfortune. Richard Shaw Brown, Jr ( www.agt-gems.com) writes that the Vedic texts which state that pure flawless gems have auspicious powers ( Garuda Purana, Agni Purana) are correct. ” After 25 years of researching and experimenting with gemstones, it is our carefully considered opinion that the Vedic texts are correct. Flawed gems are simply a source of misfortune, not to mention their being ugly ! Think about it ! How many people are prepared to tolerate defects in their clothing, or any other personal items they possess?. Even a single scratch on a nice automobile is an eyesore, so why do people tolerate flawed gems? “

Regulation of breath gives tremendous relaxation.Pranayama, without the help of a bona fide Master, can lead to serious complications. What is needed is the practice of breathing deeply ( as deeply as possible ) through both the nostrils & then slowly breathing out ( without breath retention ). “sparkling” Spirits Surround Miranda Since Childhood
Martha Jette asked:
Miranda Clearwell of southeast Missouri was just a child when she first heard voices in her head and realized that there were “sparkling figures” around her or following her.
As she grew into a young girl, it became so natural to her that she thought everyone experienced these kinds of things.
“I just thought they were extra friends for me that I couldn’t see or talk to directly,” said Miranda.
But she soon learned that her friends at school didn’t have similar experiences and she found it very upsetting. In fact, her friends warned her that such entities must mean trouble and she should be careful.
“For a time, I thought I must be crazy,” Miranda explained. “None of my friends knew anything that could help me.” In fact she added, many of them “became upset with me.”
Her experiences began as a youngster, when she realized the presence of the entities and that things in her room would move around as well. Miranda said she could also sense a lot of negative energy in the family home and it would grow unusually dark.
“Even when the sun was coming through (a window), the house could become dark,” she explained adding that this frightened her. “That was when I started feeling a presence very strongly and then there were multiple presences.”
While most of the house gave her an eerie feeling, she said her own room felt “warm and safe.”
The first time Miranda actually saw a “sparkling figure,” she was 19 years old and it sat right on her bed!
“I could see his outline,” she said adding that he appeared to be about six feet tall and “wearing clothing that fit somewhat close to his body. It looked like smoky water,” but was easily recognizable as a man. It also looked like he was “radiating some of it… I couldn’t see anything within the outer lines of the body, so I didn’t see a face or eyes or colors. He was all clear.”
Miranda said he walked like a normal person and then “sat on the edge of my bed facing me, while I was standing up in the center of the room. Once I spotted him, I moved close enough to sit on the bed in front of him.”
At this point, she was very excited, because she had never actually seen a spirit before. She was also quite afraid.
“Of course, my heart was beating out of my chest because it was a little bit scary, but in a miraculous way.”
“When I raised my hands in front of me, he raised his own and touched them to mine.”
Miranda said his hands felt “almost like fuzzy liquid.”
“He stayed like that until my eyes blurred with tears and he was gone.”
Miranda said she was “surprised by the experience, but his simple gesture was very touching…”
Since then, she has seen as many as seven of these figures in her room at one time, but the problem is: she isn’t sure what or who they are or why they keep coming around her. Miranda said she has spoken to the entities and upon a number of occasions, asked questions and received the answers in her mind – answers that were later confirmed.
Miranda explained that as a child, there was only the foundation of a house sitting on the property next to her home. She often played in that area and did not know at the time that the house had burned down.
“Me and my little brother used to walk around that lot all the time and we’d find useless things like rusted washers, metal silverware and plenty of burned things.”
Just this past week, she learned from her mother that an elderly couple had lived there.
“The wife was considered an invalid and was stuck in a wheelchair. Her husband set the fire and left her inside knowing that she couldn’t get out. My mother said she died in that fire and that the man went to prison for murder.”
I suggested that perhaps these two people might be among the many spirits that seem to cling to her. Perhaps that dark entity is the husband. However, Miranda’s story suggests that she may also have spirit guides or even angels close to her. Not only do they help her with her problems, but they also bring her comfort.
“I feel so attached to these spirits now,” she said.
Her only desire is that she would like to learn to communicate more effectively with her visitors from the other side. If anyone has suggestions for her, please let me know.
As well, Miranda said the presence of spirits around her has caused her to re-evaluate her personal beliefs. As a child, she was raised as a Christian to believe that with death, one goes to either heaven or hell.
“That was what everyone wanted me to believe,” she said. “I was never raised to believe that souls could still wander the earth after death, so it was startling to see that something was following me around.”
Now, Miranda says she believes strongly in life after death.
“I do believe that the soul is eternal and I also believe that if a person still has something they need to accomplish, God could allow them to remain behind for a while.”
She also thinks God might allow certain souls to remain earthbound for a time “to watch over their relatives or friends that still live. Nothing is impossible with God, so my faith allowed me to accept this possibility of spirit helpers without much trouble.”
Although she admitted that the spirit realm is still somewhat of a mystery to her, Miranda said she knows that everything “happens for a reason and that not one living person can place rules on how a human soul must behave after death.”
To sum it up, the 21-year-old added, “I still believe in a final resting place, but maybe some spirits are allowed to make a few stops along the way.”

Is Your House Haunted by Scary Creatures of the Night?

Joel Owens asked:
Your house is your sanctuary. You live in it, spend most of your life in it and deem it as the only place in the world where you can truly be yourself. Like a castle to a king, your house is your domain. Your house is where you rule and conquer. But what if it turns out that there are other unseen creatures of the night roaming in your said dominion?
It is rather difficult to mark a line between a door being shut because of strong wind and a door slammed by ghostly spirits. Though random events such as this could already spell out ghost hauntings, true ghost hauntings are still rare occurrences. The fact that it is so rare might actually make you a bit paranoid whether the eerie sounds you’re hearing, figures you’re seeing and the windows suddenly closing are really signs that your house is being haunted by scary creatures of the night.
To help you ease that paranoia, I’ve listed some signs that determine whether your house is haunted. Read them and determine whether you have experience such.
1. Unexplained Noises
You are all alone, but you hear strange foot steps outside your room. Not only that, voices of children playing in the garden can be heard, as well. The weird thing about it is that when you looked outside, no one was in sight. The sound differs from time to time. Sometimes, you hear the sounds of chains clanking or a faint cry of a woman during the night. You can’t explain where these strange sounds come from, and most of all, they bring chills up and down your spine.
2. Furniture Being Moved
You placed your coffee table beside your favorite couch. For some strange reason you can’t wrap your head around, you would walk into the living room next morning to find the coffee table moved to a different spot. You thought someone in your family must have done it, so you pass it up and let the strange event go. Just when you think it’s over, you wake up one day and open your eyes to find pieces of furniture all over the place in random spots. Clearly, one of those creatures of the night wants to make its presence known.
3. Creepy Apparitions
You point the camera and click the button. The picture comes out perfectly with three of your friends smiling, but a blurry creature seems to be caught by your camera, as well. In another instance, you look into the mirror and see the reflection of a hazy image behind you making your knees tremble with fear. If this has happened more than twice in your house, consider the thought of seeking a paranormal expert’s help.
4. Strange Feeling of Being Watched
You don’t see anything strange or hear anything spooky, but you always feel like someone is watching for you. The thought is enough to send chills up and down your spine. This usually happens in a particular part of the house.
5. Animals’ Weird Behavior
Your pets suddenly act in a strange way. Your dogs bark at no one and have that scared look to their actions. According to paranormal experts, animals have a way of knowing and sensing whether there are evil creatures of the night co-habitating in your house.
These are just some of the signs of a haunted house. If you’re unlucky, stranger and more damaging events might occur in your domain. Unfortunately, not everyone is sensitive to these signs of abhorring ghost hauntings.
So what do you do when you have already deduced that your house is haunted? Don’t waste time and call a paranormal expert to appease the spirits in a more appropriate way. Do so immediately and don’t wait for the ghosts to be destructive. This might seem surreal, but it is a sure way to put to rest the creatures of the night wanting to dominate your house.

Scary Creatures in Reality and Wild Imaginings

Joel Owens asked:
In the realm of mortals, life may seem to be closing in on black and white. We lead our lives with the orientation that only the quantifiable, observable and overt are deemed to be true. However, in the realm of the endless, human beings are mere mortal creatures and truth is not a matter of great importance. It is a world where scary creatures lurk, ghosts and mummies cause mayhem, and humans are at the mercy of unfathomable paranormal events.
Many ghost stories and urban legends about scary creatures have been circulating throughout the years. Despite these, people are still skeptical as to the veracity of the ghostly figures in these stories. Stories can’t seem to stand against the strong mantra “to see is to believe”.
These scary creatures are described as undead entities that reanimate restless spirits wanting to take revenge for their untimely deaths. Ghosts are just some of these undead creatures lurking in the shadows of urban legends. Ghosts are restless spirits of dead people that usually haunt the place where they once lived. As depicted in films and books, these scary creatures haunt the living to search for justice and closure for their tragic deaths. However, not all ghosts are depicted as such. In some cases, ghosts just “hang around” us without any intention of causing some loud screams. They are stuck in between heaven and hell because their spirits can’t rest in peace until they finish their purpose here in the realm of mortals.
Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky is said to be haunted by scary creatures we call ghosts. Once a two-story hospital accommodating tuberculosis patients, this place was allegedly the dying place of more than 8000 TB patients from 1911 to 1945. The worst cases of these deaths occurred during the outbreak of the disease in World War II. Documentaries and paranormal investigations said that there are small, child-like features caught on camera. Scary wails and screams are heard in empty rooftops and patios of the sanatorium. Moving shadows that have substance and are able to walk across doors are allegedly seen in places where dying patients are situated.
The current plan for the sanatorium is to transform it into a hotel to target the haunted hotel crowd and regular hotel patrons.
Villisca in Iowa, considered as one of the scariest places on earth, is also said to be haunted by the ghosts of the brutally murdered members of the Moore family. The murder itself was arguably one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history. On June 10, 1912 was the last day when 6 members of the Moore family and their two young guests were ever seen alive. They were dismembered by an assailant who viciously killed them with an axe. The heinous crime is still a mystery to be solved by the authorities as the killer is still unknown to this day.
To this day, the Moore house is said to be haunted by the spirits of its former inhabitants. Curious visitors of the “Villisca House” claimed to have heard voices of children who didn’t exist. Efforts have been done to renovate the house, but it seems that the scary creatures in the “Murder House” hinder the plan since the weather-beaten house is the only witness to the nightmare that took place in the Moore household.
Whether ghosts or other scary creatures are just figments of playful imaginations or a validation that the paranormal exists is still under scrutiny and discussion. As for now, all we know is that as long as there are unexplained phenomena occurring and haunting our dreams and wild imaginings, more stories about these forsaken and scary creatures will be told.

Deb Bunting asked:
In 2003, the American Institute of Paranormal Psychology named Savannah America’s Most Haunted City. And Savannah is able to support the title. Ghosts, apparitions or paranormal activities have been reported at many of Savannah’s inns, restaurants, private residences, and of course, cemeteries.
There are many magnificently restored buildings nestled around Savannah’s twenty-one squares. Many of these buildings are stately homes supposedly still occupied by former owners. James Habersham has been known to roam around the Olde Pink House, now a restaurant, but formerly his home. Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts, was born and raised in Savannah. Her parents, long deceased, are said to still roam Juliette’s childhood home.
Savannah’s Sorrel-Weed House, visited by The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) in 2005 as part of their SciFi Ghost Hunters Halloween special, is supposedly haunted. The story goes that Mrs. Weed caught her husband in a compromising position with one of the Weed’s many slaves. Mrs. Weed, very distraught, ran back to her second-floor bedroom. After a long argument with her husband, she either threw herself (or was thrown) to her death from a second floor balcony. Soon after Mrs. Weed’s death, the slave found with Mr. Weed was found hung in her slave quarters. Both women are said to be still roaming the grounds.
The Hampton-Lillibridge House was said to be so haunted, that Jim Williams (of “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” fame) had an exorcism performed at this former boarding house. On countless occasions, residents and passersby have heard the sound of jazz coming from inside the home.
The Kehoes were a very prominent family in Savannah, as Mr. Kehoe owned the ironworks on the riverfront. The Kehoes built this fireproof, all-iron home and lived there with their 10 children. The Kehoe’s heirs sold the house in 1930 and the property changed hands many times to include use for 65 years as the Goette Funeral Home. It is now a beautiful bed and breakfast where many of its visitors report supernatural occurrences such as a woman screaming, a nurse shushing visitors, the Lady in White making appearances, and several instances involving ghosts of children.
The list goes on and on!
So, what is it about Savannah that makes it so attractive to ghosts and ghost stories? Many people start with the fact that Savannah is literally built on its dead. Savannah was the first city in Georgia founded in 1733. It was established in the same location as the Creek and Choctaw maintained their burial grounds.
As the colony began to grow and thrive, it needed more room. Buildings were erected on the burial plots of the original colonists. Tombstones in cemeteries were moved to make room for sidewalks and roads. Places of worship were erected on the graves of slaves.
Second, Savannah has a very violent history. Many bloody battles and skirmishes were fought in Savannah. One of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution, the Siege of Savannah, where about 1200 men lost their lives in one hour, was fought in Savannah.
Also, the city has been victim to many city-wide fires, at least two yellow-fever epidemics and several hurricanes.
Third, Savannah has been a major port city since the days of King Cotton, so many a sailor has ventured through Savannah spinning a romantic tale or two.
Fourth, Savannahians are (proudly) an eccentric bunch, as were their ancestors, which adds history and volume to the ghost stories. Take the
Lastly, I blame the large amounts of Spanish moss hanging from the majestic oak trees. The blankets of moss look like ghostly shrouds and give the entire region an eerie look.
Whatever the reason, the ghost stories are endless, earning the Savannah the right to the title of America’s Most Haunted City.
