Making Friends in Social Gatherings

Self Dev asked:
Human beings are social people and this means that they will always make friends, keep the ones they socially connect with and lose touch with the ones they have not built closeness with.
This is the reason why gatherings that offer social grounds such as discos, restaurants, churches, football pitches and even parties are very popular. It is also the same reason why social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter have grown at a very high rate. Most people look forward to attending social functions and after the event, they reflect on how many friends they have made, who attended the function and whether they will meet again in another function.
For some people, making friends can be easy while for others it may be a challenge. Human beings get attracted to someone and wish to be their friend because of their talent, sense of humor, common interest or just simple need for a friend.
Young people go out of their way to polish their looks, dress in a trendy way, practice a few jokes or rehearse the latest dance move before a party so that it can earn them new friends.
It would cause any person a lot of emotional stress if they attended a function where no one was interested in making friends with them. It is in this line that you find that people do not go to events where they do not know anybody unless they carry a friend along.
The next time you call someone your friend, think of the circumstances under which you met and what keeps you glued as friends. It would be interesting to keep this data.

Help Your Kids Make Friends at High School

Frank McGinty asked:
As the new school term gets under way, many children entering high school worry about making new friends. Without being in their face, there’s a lot parents can do to help them with this major change in their lives.
Step 1: It may seem obvious, but ENCOURAGE your kids to make friends. Help them see it as a new adventure, something enjoyable and exciting. This will help reduce any fear and anxiety. The more positive and outgoing they are, the better chance they’ll have of meeting and attracting new friends.
Step 2: One of the best ways to make new friends in high school is to get involved in clubs and activities. Whether we care to admit it or not, we base our friendships on what we get from others! People who share our interests become our friends; people who have radically different preferences and temperaments don’t become our friends! So when your kids join clubs that suit their interests, they will meet like-minded people. And by doing things together they will forge new bonds.
Step 3: Encourage your kids to invite their new friends home, perhaps even staying for a sleepover once the friendship is established. This is a great way of helping your kids develop their social skills. It ensures they are in a safe environment, plus it helps you to monitor the friendships!
Step 4: However, try to avoid the common parental trait of being too fussy! Often the type of people WE want as friends for our kids are not the ones they would choose. Be tolerant and less critical. If you become aware of unacceptable attitudes or behavior, that’s different. By all means let’s HELP our kids by pointing out anything that violates our standards, but hang back if you simply dislike the way someone talks or what they wear or their taste in music! You never know, you may gather valuable insight into what really makes your own kids tick. And remember – it takes all sorts to make the world go round!
Step 5: Impress upon your kids that not all friendships last and the teenage years are a time of exploration. Kids tend to develop new interests as the school years progress, and often this leads to the break-up of old friendships and the forging of new ones. It can be upsetting, but it’s a fact of life! Explaining this sympathetically can help your kids be brave and stoical. You can also remind your child that he or she may have dropped an old friend in favor of a new one, and that person may be unhappy as a result.
And finally:
* Comfort your kids when they feel let down by friends. Keep encouraging them to participate in more activities and this will help them find more friends.
* When your kids visit their friends’ homes, especially if they are sleeping over, make sure you have contact information and know exactly where they are.

How Dating Can Help In Making Friends
Rodrigo Rehn asked:
Those of you who are still in a notion that men and women can never be friends should come out of these orthodox concepts. There are many people of different age groups who consider dating as a way to make new friends. They are not really looking for romantic partners and some of them already have one.
But they do not have sufficient friends and this is the reason why they try out the method of dating to acquire new friends to share feelings and get support. There are no boundaries in friendship and a friend can be anyone with whom you feel comfortable enough to open up.
The more you make friends the closer you get bonded with the society which is really good for you as most of us are loosing our social contacts because of the rat race of life. Moreover the number of places that you can visit on boring weekends also increase remarkably which is the most profitable part of making friendship.
It happens at times that you get to know a person from different sources. This can be a speed dating event or an internet dating site. Then you gradually have phone conversations with the person and start liking him or her.
Then you two fix an appointment to meet somewhere. But this might happen that you do not get the feel after meeting each other that two lovers should feel. It is nothing but the x-factor which can be missing.
But this does not mean that you will not like the person. He might not be the dream date of your or the right partner for you. But surely he or she can become a real good friend as you have common topics to discuss about and sometimes can also share the feelings that you cannot share with anybody else.
This can start from dating but end up into a long term friendly relationship. But there can be many cases where the date is fixed with the intention of making friendship with the other person. Both of them already knew that; hence they will be mentally prepared. This is an added benefit that can be obtained from dating
Side-effects
No good trick is devoid of any adverse effects. There are some here as well. Often it happens that one of the dates start liking the opponent wherein he or she is just a friend to their date. This is when the heart breaks take place. Moreover if you already have a spouse then the chances are high that they will not understand your motive behind dating and you can get into serious trouble. So be careful before you adapt dating as the technique of making friends.

Want to Make Friends? Make New Friends With Chummychums!
Vikram kuamr asked:
As human beings we need to interact with others to live a fulfilling life. It is very important to have good people surrounding us as we live our lives. The worth of friendship cannot be overlooked.
Perhaps you are one of the lucky people in this world that has many friends with interests similar to yours that have remained in your life for a very longtime. However, for some of us, that is not the case. We have lost touch with our childhood friends due to relocation for a new job, an unfortunate disagreement, or simply because our lives went in different directions (ex: children, marriage) As we all know, there is not a formula or how-to guide to make friends.
The process of making new friends has never been easy, especially if you are a busy career women or a stay at home mom. In today’s day and age, however, the internet is providing us with the means to do certain things that we would not have been able to do 10 years ago. With the use of the internet, it is now a whole lot easier to make friends. We now all have the ability to search for new friends, online.
Whether you are still in school, a stay at home mom or a busy career woman, you can now use your own personal time to find the right friend online in the comfort of your own home. You can easily meet new people and make some new friends with the help of various websites available on the internet.
One website geared towards women looking to make other women friends is Chummychums. There are a number of reasons why this site is distinct from other social networking sites when looking to make friends.

You can also search and see if your potential new friends are single or married and whether or not they have children.

How to Make Friends

Dr David Black asked:
In today’s busy world one often finds that work and time constraints seem to control our lives and that we rarely find time to have a real conversation with anyone. In bygone years people wrote letters to each other and archives have displays of letters which are full of care and love for others.
Then came the telephone. Communication became easy between friends but was found to be time consuming. Nowadays it seems easier to send an email or a text message. These text messages are often abbreviated for economy and look as if they were transmitted by a machine to be read by another machine.
Certainly they carry no essence of human love or semblance of friendship. They are erased immediately after having been read by the recipient and like a speck of dust blown away by the wind, are no longer in existence. The hand written letter of yesteryear, sometimes written on perfumed paper, carried an entirely different message.
How can we regain the feelings of friendship and camaraderie and find ourselves in a circle of genuine friends who care for each other and care about each other? There are a number of tried and true steps that should take if we are to succeed in our mission.
1. Get out there! This means that you will need to get up from watching TV or sitting at the computer and go somewhere else.
2. You will need to be involved in activities that you think you might like but you do not necessarily have to excel in or be good at doing them. Just be there.
3. Here are some of the things or places that you could try: A church, choir, painting class, basketball , debating club, bush, walking etc. The key to making new friends at these activities will be to involve yourself with the other people there. Develop a strategy and walk up to them with a smile and introduce yourself. Do not be formal but rather say, ” Hello, I’m David” and put out your hand to shake their hand.
This approach makes eye contact which is very important and also makes body contact as well. They will respond to your contact by saying their name, looking you in the eye and shaking your hand .Now repeat their name by replying to them, ” Nice to meet you Mary” or whatever their name is.
Remember their name and repeat it to yourself six times so that when you see them again you will be be able to greet them by their name. Did you know that the most important word in a person’s whole life is their own name? Now tell them that you are new to the church, group, team or whatever, and would like to meet some of the other people there.
It is quite likely that the person that you have just met will call over some of their friends and introduce you to them also. Just remember to say their names aloud , shake their hands, whether male or female, and try to remember their names. Maybe you can make up a silly rhyme to remind yourself of their name !
4. Now that you have met some people, start to involve yourself in the activities. You will quickly find that you seem to get on better with some people better than others. This is normal and natural.
5. Be a good listener. By this I mean that you should hear what they are saying and empathise with them by looking into their eyes when they are speaking and make the appropriate ****** expression in response to what they are saying. This means that if they say something amusing you can smile or if they say something sad you show sympathy. It is a good idea to nod when they speak so as to show that you are with them and agree with and understand what they are saying. In today’s world it is a rare thing to find someone to seems to know how you are feeling. Your new friend will be deeply appreciative of this fact and will seek you out again.
6. Give people your telephone number or email address. Let them know that you would love to hear from them and that you are always free to go out out for a coffee or movie etc. They will understand that you are not stand-offish and can be readily approached.
7. Do not be a know all .We all think that we are knowledgeable but we need to realise that others have opinions and thoughts that may be quite different to ours. Respect their opinions and do not allow yourself to be drawn into discussions or arguments of a contentious nature. They will not get you anywhere and can break up a friendship.
8. Become a volunteer. In our materialistic world it is the volunteers who really stand out in a crowd. They give of themselves freely to help make the world a better place. The organization, club, choir, group etc that you have joined can always do with extra helping hands and your
volunteering to do a job will make you a lot of friends. People who might not have noticed you volunteer.
9. Lastly respect your new friends’ confidences and do not engage in idle gossip. A true friend feels able to exchange confidential information and knows that this will be kept inviolate and not repeated to anyone else.
10. Do not criticize other people when speaking to your friends. It is better to be known as someone who always has a good word to say about someone rather than being know as a person with a sharp tongue.
